ABOUT NICOLA CUSTEAU
I’m in my final year at Concordia University, completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design. Before entering the program, I had no previous formal training in the arts or design, but I’ve always been drawn to creative. My exploration of creative expression began with sewing, crocheting, drawing, and crafting— interests that have continued to evolve over time. That natural inclination led me to develop a deep passion not just for design, but for learning as well.
Throughout my studies, I’ve been able to engage with a variety of design disciplines, including graphic, spatial, environmental, and industrial design. Through research-based projects, I discovered a strong affinity for graphic design, as I appreciated the way it merges storytelling with creativity. I love that even though it’s typically a 2D medium, it has the power to come to life through typographic exploration, engaging visuals, and playful colours.
Spending a semester abroad in Copenhagen was transformative for my design ethos. I was deeply inspired by Scandinavian design—and its strong sense of community, sustainability, and functionality. Since my practice is rooted in problem-solving, I was able to draw a lot of inspiration from Scandinavian design methods, as they follow a similar approach. As my design practice continue to evolve, I’ve come to center my work around four key principles: community, sustainability, functionality, and versatility.
